Coaching the Whole Athlete: Beyond Swim Bike Run

Beyond swim, bike & run: What Coaching Really Looks Like at F4L Triathlon Coaching

Coaching the Whole Athlete: Beyond Swim Bike RunWhen you think of triathlon coaching, it’s easy to picture swim sets, power thresholds, or interval splits. But for me, coaching goes far beyond that.

My dream — my life’s ambition — is to guide an athlete all the way to Olympic gold. That’s the spark that drives everything I do. But while I work toward that goal, my day-to-day mission is just as important: to help every athlete I coach become the very best version of themselves, to enjoy the journey, and to feel they’re part of something greater than just a training plan.

Along the way, I’ve learned that coaching isn’t confined to the pages of a manual. In fact, most of it isn’t.

To truly support an athlete, I’ve had to wear many hats:

Bike mechanic. Philosopher. Psychologist. Relationship counsellor. Masseuse. Chef. Driving instructor. Maths teacher. Financial advisor. Travel agent. Pack horse. Parent whisperer. Taxi driver. Wedding planner.

And no, I’m not an expert in any of them — but I show up, I listen, I care, and I adjust. Every time.

Because when an athlete walks onto a track, hops in a pool, or clips into their pedals, they’re not just bringing their heart rate zones with them. They’re bringing their whole lives. If something is weighing them down, I want to be the kind of coach who helps them set it down — so they can be fully present in their training and unlock more from every session.

Training with me isn’t one-size-fits-all. Every program is tailored not just to an athlete’s fitness, but to their lifestyle, goals, and what’s going on in their world. The goal? Training that is balanced, sustainable, and consistent. A plan they can stick with. A plan that supports them as a whole person — not just an athlete.

Over the past 20 years, I’ve poured myself into learning, evolving, and improving — whether that’s through formal coaching qualifications, observing and being mentored by others, or just soaking up knowledge every chance I get. I’m still learning. Still growing. Still chasing that dream.

"Control the controllables. If you cannot affect it, do not let it affect you."

That’s a philosophy I try to pass on to every athlete I work with.

And truthfully? I feel like I’m only just getting started.
