IRONMAN Off-Season Training: Why Base Season Wins Races

Why Your IRONMAN Off-Season Training Decides Your Season

IRONMAN trainingMost triathletes don't lose their race on race day. They lose it months earlier, somewhere between September and March, when the temptation is either to do nothing at all or to keep racing fitness limping along on fumes. If you're building towards an IRONMAN in 2027, this is the block of training that actually decides how your season goes — long before you ever see a start line.

The Off-Season Trap

I see two mistakes far more than any others at this time of year.

  • Athletes who stop structured training the moment the racing season ends, then try to cram fitness back in during a panicked January — usually picking up an injury on the way.
  • Athletes who never really back off, staying in “race sharp” mode all winter because slowing down feels like losing fitness.

Both miss the point of an off-season. IRONMAN performance is built on a big aerobic engine, and that engine is built with months of consistent, mostly easy training — not another block of intervals bolted onto a tired body. This is the unglamorous work that nobody posts about on Strava, and it's the single biggest predictor of how you'll feel at kilometre 30 of the marathon next year.

What Good Base Training Actually Looks Like

Done properly, an off-season isn't time off — it's the foundation everything else sits on.

  • Rebuild aerobic volume gradually. Small, consistent increases beat heroic single weeks that leave you wrecked and behind again.
  • Fix technique while intensity is low. Swim drills, run cadence and posture, bike position — this is the time of year to sort them, not race week.
  • Add two strength sessions a week. It protects you from injury through the volume build and gives you a power reserve you'll be glad of on race day.
  • Test your numbers early. FTP, swim CSS, run threshold — train off facts, not guesswork or last year's zones.
  • Target last season's actual weak link deliberately, rather than just repeating what you already know you can do.

Mallorca Triathlon Training Camp 2027Why a Training Camp Changes the Game

A well-run training camp compresses months of this work into a single week of warm-weather, coached, distraction-free training — the kind of concentrated volume that's almost impossible to replicate solo through a British winter. Quality open water swimming, proper hill work on the bike, video analysis, and training alongside other athletes chasing the same goal all add up to a disproportionate jump in fitness and confidence for the days invested.

Our next Mallorca training camp runs 17–24 April 2027 in Colonia de Sant Jordi — from £1,099pp, with a £250 deposit to secure your place. Timed right after a winter of proper base building, it's the ideal capstone to your off-season and springboard into race season for anyone building towards a 2027 IRONMAN.

Where Coaching Makes the Difference

I've spent over 20 years coaching triathletes, and the plans that work aren't generic ones pulled off a shelf. My job is to help people achieve the impossible — their goals, their ambitions — whether that's getting to a first triathlon finish line or chasing a Kona qualification, built around training that fits real life: family first, work second, training third, and still gets you to the start line in the shape of your life.

I'm a British Triathlon Level 3 and IRONMAN Certified Coach, also holding Triathlon Australia Performance Coach and Certified Biomechanics Coach credentials — so whatever stage you're at, the plan in front of you is built on what actually works, not what looks good on paper.

Start Now, Not in March

If 2027 is your IRONMAN year, the work starts now — not when the weather turns. Get in touch about 1-2-1 coaching with F4L, or secure your place on the 2027 Mallorca training camp and give your off-season a proper finish line of its own.
