Right now, thousands of age-groupers are scrolling the IRONMAN calendar trying to decide where they'll race in 2027. Most will pick based on a friend's recommendation, a nice-looking finish line photo, or the race everyone's heard of.
The race you choose shapes your entire year: when you train, what you train, and how much it costs your family. Here's how I help athletes choose.
1. Start With Your Life, Not the Course
Before you look at a single course map, get the family calendar out.
- When are the school holidays, and are you away?
- When are your busiest periods at work?
- Are there weddings, big birthdays or house moves already in the diary?
Your biggest training weeks usually fall six to ten weeks before race day. If those land on a family fortnight in Cornwall or your year-end at work, pick a different race. It's that simple.
2. Get the Timing Right
For UK-based athletes, race date decides what kind of winter you'll have.
- Early season (May): You'll be doing your long-ride build in February and March, which means a lot of turbo time. IRONMAN Lanzarote is on 15 May 2027. Great if you thrive indoors and can get away for warm-weather riding; tough if you can't.
- Mid-summer (June–July): The sweet spot for most. You get spring outdoor riding and a proper build. IRONMAN Frankfurt, the European Championship, is on 27 June 2027.
- Late season (August–September): Long summer evenings to train in, but your peak weeks collide with the school holidays, and you're racing when motivation can be flagging.
Dates for the rest of the 2027 European calendar are being confirmed on a rolling basis, so check the official race page on ironman.com before you commit.
3. Be Honest About Your Strengths
Every course has a personality. Match it to yours.
- Hilly and windy (Lanzarote is the classic example) rewards strong climbers with good bike handling who pace with discipline. It punishes big engines who can't hold back.
- Rolling and fast (like Frankfurt) suits steady, well-paced athletes, but late-June heat can turn the marathon into a survival shuffle.
- Sea swims bring waves, salt and sighting challenges. Lake swims are usually calmer, but check the historical water temperatures: a non-wetsuit swim is a very different day for a nervous swimmer.
If heat has hurt you before, don't pick a race that's regularly hot and hope for a cool year. Hope isn't a plan.
4. Think About Travel and Logistics
A race abroad is part race, part holiday, part logistics exercise. Factor in:
- Bike transport: bike box, airline fees or a bike courier.
- Travel time: arrive at least two to three days before race day to register, rack, recce and settle.
- Cost: entry, flights, accommodation and food for the family can easily cost more than the race entry itself.
- The family: if they're coming, choose somewhere they'll enjoy while you're lying on the hotel bed with your legs up the wall.
5. Read the Small Print
Before you enter:
- Cut-offs: most full-distance IRONMAN races have a 17-hour overall limit with intermediate cut-offs on the swim and bike. Check the athlete guide, especially if you're a weaker swimmer.
- Price tiers: entries often go up in price as the race fills, so decide early.
- Transfer and deferral policy: life happens. Know your options before you pay.
My Rule of Thumb
- First IRONMAN? Choose a mid-summer race with a moderate course, a likely wetsuit swim and a date that gives you nine to twelve months to prepare. Save Lanzarote for later.
- Coming back for another? Pick a course that fixes last time's problem. If the heat got you, go north. If the hills got you, choose a flatter course, or go straight at the hills and train for them properly.
- Chasing a Kona slot? The 2027 IRONMAN World Championship is on 9 October 2027 in Kailua-Kona. Pick a race whose profile suits you, not just one that looks fast on paper.
Then Work Backwards
Once your race is booked, the plan builds itself backwards from race day: taper, peak block, build, base. My 2027 training plan guide covers how to set that up.
If you're targeting a May or June race, our Mallorca Triathlon Training Camp (17–24 April 2027) fits neatly into both: it's your last big block four weeks before Lanzarote, or a perfectly placed volume week about nine weeks out from Frankfurt.

FAQ
What is the best IRONMAN for a first-timer?
A mid-summer race with a moderate bike course, a lake or sheltered swim that's likely to be wetsuit-legal, and a date that gives you nine to twelve months of preparation. Avoid races known for extreme heat, wind or climbing for your first full distance.
How long do I need to train for an IRONMAN?
With a triathlon background, most age-groupers need nine to twelve months of consistent training, including a winter base phase and a 16–20 week race-specific build. Newer athletes should allow longer.
When is IRONMAN Frankfurt 2027?
IRONMAN Frankfurt, the European Championship, takes place on 27 June 2027.
When is IRONMAN Lanzarote 2027?
IRONMAN Lanzarote takes place on 15 May 2027. It's known as one of the toughest courses on the circuit because of its wind, heat and climbing.
Is it better to choose a flat or hilly IRONMAN?
Choose the course that matches your strengths and your training environment. Flat courses reward steady pacing; hilly courses reward climbing strength and discipline. Either can be the right choice if you train specifically for it.

Why a Training Camp Changes the Game
A well-run training camp compresses months of this work into a single week of warm-weather, coached, distraction-free training — the kind of concentrated volume that's almost impossible to replicate solo through a British winter. Quality open water swimming, proper hill work on the bike, video analysis, and training alongside other athletes chasing the same goal all add up to a disproportionate jump in fitness and confidence for the days invested.
Our next Mallorca training camp runs 17–24 April 2027 in Colonia de Sant Jordi — from £1,099pp, with a £250 deposit to secure your place. Timed right after a winter of proper base building, it's the ideal capstone to your off-season and springboard into race season for anyone building towards a 2027 IRONMAN.

Where Coaching Makes the Difference
I've spent over 20 years coaching triathletes, and the plans that work aren't generic ones pulled off a shelf. My job is to help people achieve the impossible — their goals, their ambitions — whether that's getting to a first triathlon finish line or chasing a Kona qualification, built around training that fits real life: family first, work second, training third, and still gets you to the start line in the shape of your life.
I'm a British Triathlon Level 3 and IRONMAN Certified Coach, also holding Triathlon Australia Performance Coach and Certified Biomechanics Coach credentials — so whatever stage you're at, the plan in front of you is built on what actually works, not what looks good on paper.
Start Now, Not in March
If 2027 is your IRONMAN year, the work starts now — not when the weather turns. Get in touch about 1-2-1 coaching with F4L, or secure your place on the 2027 Mallorca training camp and give your off-season a proper finish line of its own.
